The Axe is based on a fire axe, which suggests it was maybe taken from a deserted fire station in the apocalyptic world. No matter of its origin, it's still an effective tool to deal with zombies.
The Axe deals high damage per hit, but its attack rate is reduced, due to its heavy weight. However, it's still slightly higher than the one of the Hammer. Unfortunately, even when fully upgraded, its damage is significantly lower than the Hammer has, so its faster attack rate can't remain as an advantage in later parts of the game when the Hammer is unlocked and zombies are already very strong.
The Axe is the second strongest melee weapon that doesn't require fuel, being surpassed only by the Hammer.

- The glitch in the Knife also works for the Axe. Pressing the reload button while reloading and switch to the melee weapon will make the index finger point at something.
- Sometimes when moving and attacking, a bandage can be seen on Kyle's right wrist.
