Piracy

Dead Trigger

Around the release of the game, piracy rates were exponentially high, due to the IAP. The game allows users to pay real money to boost their equipment. Players are not required to pay for them, though playing through without purchases is slow. Several users were complaining Madfinger asks for more money after the initial $0.99, which caused a spike in piracy. Due to this, the developer decided to drop the $0.99 charge, and made it available as a free-to-play game.

Many users who payed were upset at this movement, and requested compensation or a refund. Madfinger has released updates to combat this, and gave users who payed compensation by giving them additional Gold, or Money, than those who didn't pay before release, and in the 1.5.0 update for Android, the Alien Gun.

Concerning the new business model, Anna Porizkova has this to say:

Pocket Gamer: What prompted the decision to make Dead Trigger free on Google Play?

Anna Porizkova: The main reason is that the piracy rate is simply too high on Android devices.

At first, we wanted to make this game available for as many people as possible – that's why it was priced at just 99c – much less than the $8 we originally asked for Shadowgun.

But, on the other hand, we didn't dare to provide it for free, since we don't have any real experience with the free-to-play model here at Madfinger.

On the games official Facebook page, they released this statement:

The main reason: piracy rate on Android devices, that was unbelievably high. At first we intend to make this game available for as many people as possible - that's why it was for as little as buck.

It was much less than 8$ for SHADOWGUN but on the other hand we didn't dare to provide it for free, since we hadn't got XP with free-to-play format so far.

However, even for one buck, the piracy rate is soooo giant, that we finally decided to provide DEAD TRIGGER for free. Anyway - DEAD TRIGGER is not freemium, it always was and still remains free to play, that means, all players are able to play it without IAP. We stand up for this statement, because all members of our team are playing (and enjoying) DEAD TRIGGER without IAP.
