The SPAS is a pump-action shotgun with a devastating damage. Although its damage is significantly higher and the player can carry more ammunition, it works similarly to the other pump-action shotguns.
The SPAS is a shotgun, meaning that it's effective only in a close range combat. (its effective range is almost same as the range of CZ 75). However, it can deal a massive amount of damage in this range, killing normal zombies with one shots and even the Special Zombies won't take more than a magazine to kill. It can make Panzer turn back in a few shots, then two or three shots are capable of killing it, if fired from an immediate range.
As it's a pump-action shotgun, it suffers from a slow rate of fire, caused by the need to "pump" it after each shot to load a new round into the chamber. It also uses a tube magazine, reloaded manually with one shell after each other. Reloading a full magazine at once can take quite a while, so "tactical reloading" after up to three shells fired is useful to prevent being cornered by zombies when out of ammo.
It's good to pair this weapon with an assault rifle or other weapon with high range and automatic fire mode.
In Gunsmith Tuesday, the SPAS is described by Buck as "It is a true work-horse, deep chamber, good kick, and excellent stabilizers. The SPAS is a semi-auto angel of death. Good for wide-angled walker slaughter and perfect for killing annoying punks who ask stupid questions." Buck refers to the T.N.T as the "punk" and the "one who asks stupid questions."
